A Diet for Rheumatoid Arthritis: The 3-Day Phenomenon

As we struggle with swollen joints, fatigue, doctor’s appointments, prescriptions, and trying to process more information than we ever wanted about Rheumatoid Arthritis, it’s nearly impossible to believe that we can be well and healthy again in less than a week.

But it is true.

There is a huge amount of scientific evidence going back decades, as well as innumerable personal stories indicating that Rheumatoid Arthritis is linked directly to foods that our immune systems have come to believe are toxins.

Alas! Although dietary changes will eliminate all symptoms of RA, there is no magic bullet. Each person has to discover his or her own foods to avoid.

Every person’s life experiences and resulting physiology are individually unique, as are the dietary triggers for inflammation, which is what causes the pain, joint swelling and destruction of Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is also the underlying condition in many other disorders. Our immune systems are, for reasons yet unknown, miraculously exclusive to each of us and each person has to learn for him/her self what their own personal triggers are.

How to learn? That part is fairly simple.

If food is the immediate cause of an inflammatory response, it will go away, completely and totally, within a few days if food is eliminated during a water-only fast. Since it takes 3 days for a food to clear our bodies, the fast cannot be done in less time, and no cheating is allowed.

By day 4, your symptoms will have disappeared and you will be back to feeling normal. That is clear and undeniable evidence that your condition is caused by what you eat. It will make a believer out of you.

At that point, you have found the secret 3-Day Miracle and your Rheumatoid Arthritis is on its way to becoming a part of your past instead of your present and future.

The other, more iffy, way to accomplish the same thing is to use an elimination diet consisting of a few foods that you almost never eat. You have to use rarely eaten foods because it is the foods you consume frequently that are causing you trouble. If you choose your elimination diet wisely, you will achieve the same miracle in 3 days that you would have if you had fasted because you will have focused on eating only foods that don’t provoke your immune system. And that is the point: to stop harassing your immune system with foods that it won’t tolerate.

If you choose to use an elimination diet, it is crucial that you keep a journal of everything that goes into your mouth as well as how you feel and where precisely the pain is. Over time, that journal will point the way to the foods you should avoid and bring you more health than you can imagine today.

Because of the possibility of accidentally including foods in an elimination diet that cause a bad reaction, it’s not so recommended. The most certain way to find your miracle is to use a water-only fast.

Once you have convinced yourself that the problem causing RA is your diet, it is time to begin looking seriously and long term at fixing it. The way to do that is by continuing the elimination diet, maintaining a journal, and gradually testing more foods.

If food causes an inflammatory arthritis response, then it can also be healed by changing the food. When you learn what to stay away from you will be, once and for all, in control of the inflammation, the disorder and your life.

Only your own body can make clear what annoys it and what you should avoid. Make friends with your body and listen. However misguided it might be when it comes to RA, it always tries to protect you. Never, ever, think of your body as an enemy. It hears what you tell yourself and your thoughts will become self fulfilling prophecies.

There are some well known food allergens and with some experimenting, you’ll know if they apply to you or if you can tolerate them, in which case you need to look further for the cause of your symptoms.

The usual list of suspects includes the following:

Soy – Used in many breads, bakery products and other processed foods.
Gluten – found in some form in an incredible number of processed foods.
Citrus fruits and any processed food using citric acid as a preservative

An invisible cause of allergy and one that is not even being studied, is genetically modified foods, which now includes almost all corn, soy, cotton products, and beet sugar produced in the U.S. Monsanto is continually developing new forms of proprietary genetically modified seeds while keeping the court calendar full as it uses its deep- pockets to sue small-pocket farmers who don’t toe their line.

Unless you use no processed foods of any kind, you have GM products in your pantry.

There has been no testing of the health effects of GM foods. They may well be something your immune system refuses to live with.

There is also the gasses that are now being used to preserve the fresh appearance of meats, poultry and fish, no matter how old they might be. Like GM products, the FDA caved on this one without testing or monitoring because, they say, it is GRAS – Generally Regarded As Safe.

Why are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, argon, nitrogen and other gas preservatives regarded as GRAS? The food processing industry convinced the FDA that those gasses are no different from the ones we breath everyday.

However, there is a huge biologic difference between metabolizing gas through the airways and lungs and metabolizing it through the digestive system as food. I guess no one in the FDA thought of that. Your immune system may be as outraged as mine is when I try to ingest this latest pollution of the food supply.

Neither GM foods, irradiation – soon to be preserving vegetables in a grocery store near you – nor gassed meats and fish, were studied for allergic effects before moving wholesale, and invisibly, into the American diet. To Big Agra, we are all test mice.

These latest forms of pollution are not identified on food labels for a powerful reason: Big Agra is afraid we consumers wouldn’t buy their frankenfoods if we knew. As we try to avoid eating foods that set off inflammatory alarms in our bodies, we should be aware that we can be harmed by unstudied and hidden contaminants as well as ordinary foods.

The safest way to long term health is to concentrate on fruits and vegetables, and eat organic, which is unadulterated, as often as possible.

Thank you for such an informative site. I have been battling this for 16 years and have researched many books, websites and health care professionals with many different approach to handle all that accompanies this malfunction. This site I must say is more explanatory than any other info I have ever read.
My question is on this 3 day fasting, my understanding is “water” is all allowed to have. I am a little concerned about how I will be able to master no food for three days. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi, I just wanted to comment that CORN and corn products should be the first thing to be eliminated but is not in your list. The first doctor who extensively studied food allergies and inflammation was Dr. F.M. Carroll who lived in North Carolina. He even had a wing in our small hospital that he used to administer the food elimination diet. This was in the early 1970’s. He used only Bottled spring water during the test x 3 days, then introduced one food at the time and had the nurses take the patient’s heart rate 10 minutes after eating the food. If the resting heart rate went up 10 beats or more, they were considered sensitive to that food. The main food most people were allergic to or could not tolerate was Corn, cornmeal etc. I just remember that because at the time I was a baby nurse, and never forgot his endeavor. People came from all different states to take his food elimination diet and some still live today adhering to his finding in their life.
